A message from our General Manager:

I am pleased and honored to share with you the excitement of our Centennial anniversary and hope you will have a chance to visit us this year.

For the past century, the Grande Colonial has been one of the most esteemed hotels in San Diego, holding a particularly special place in La Jolla’s history. Our founders were committed to making this the finest first-class luxury and business hotel in what they called the ‘Western’ United States. We have been honored to host celebrities, artists, professional athletes and business leaders from all corners of the world.  Our walls have seen thousands of memorable moments, from hundreds of weddings to countless out-of-town visitors telling tales over a martini in the bar.

When you arrive and pass under the Georgian arches and lead glass windows, I hope that you sense you have entered a place with a magical and storied past. But I want you to know that beyond the turn of the century architecture, our true hallmark is our warm, friendly staff and gracious service. We all take pride in preserving the heritage laid down by our founders 100 years ago by providing the finest experience in first-class accommodations.

And just as those founders envisioned in 1913, the Grande Colonial remains today a classic European-style hotel that rivals anything in the West. Enjoy this historic journey and celebration of La Jolla’s “grande” dame.

Throughout 2013, the historic Grande Colonial celebrates the 100th anniversary of its grand opening day in February of 1913. Festivities to celebrate the Centennial will dot the 2013 calendar, helping one of San Diego’s most established and luxurious hotels share the stories of the movers and shakers who have passed through its doors — and helped shape the growth of the Village — in the 100 years since the hotel was founded.

As part of the year-long Centennial celebration, the hotel will offer:

•    A Time Capsule Contest
•    Specials and packages for overnight guests
•    Centennial merchandise for sale.  Click here to see our online gift shop and photos of the logo merchandise
•    Social media contests on Facebook (every Wednesday is History Hump Day...make sure you visit our page every week for a chance to win some fabulous prizes)
•    A historic video montage, which can be seen here on our YouTube Channel

A historic booklet has also been developed highlighting five chapters of our history:

  1. La Jolla:  A Jewel from the Start
  2. A Landmark for La Jolla
  3. Putnam’s Legacy
  4. Hollywood and the Hotel
  5. Guests or Ghosts?

We are also very interested in hearing from the community, sharing stories and photographs about the hotel and what it has meant to them over the years. Those who contribute a memory between now and December 2013 will be eligible for a monthly drawing to win a vacation package combined with dinner at NINE-TEN. Along with stories, people are also encouraged to submit historical mementos from the hotel.  For additional information or to submit your memory, please contact our marketing and public relations team at laraiza@gclj.com.

We look forward to celebrating this special time with you.
